You would be forgiven if you thought the 3D Print Shop ($63.99 at Kohls) was some sort of 3D Printer for kids. Of course, considering that Mattel has postponed their $300 3D printer demoed at Toy Fair two years ago, the price point seemed a bit unlikely. You know what they say about "too good to be true".
The photo on the box has lots of objects that look like they might have come out of such a 3D printer, and the device on the cover looks vaguely mechanical. The box proclaims "Create, Clone, Customize, Repeat", but it doesn't say "print" except up in the name. Anyway, testers got really excited, only to find that inside there were a series of molds into which you injected with a material that hardens. There is also a material that can be used to create small molds of your own objects.
Regardless, this is not really a "print shop", that lets you, as is the common understanding of 3D printing, design and print 3D shapes. It is a "mold machine". I think you would do better to skip this rather pricey set and move to modelling clay if you want to stimulate your child's creative 3D impulses.
