I recently took a look at three new specialty cables for iPads and iPhones provided by StarTech.com that use the ubiquitous 30-pin dock connector used on older Apple models. If you've ever had to replace your iPhone cable you know it's not cheap. StarTech.com's cables aren't much cheaper, but they may better suit your needs.
The most versitle of the cables provided for review by StarTech is a two foot long USB cable that can be used to charge via a 30-pin connector to the i-device, or to a device that uses a micro-USB. This 2-in-1 capability makes it a natural fit for road warriors seeking to minimize clutter and weight in their travel bags.
Two other cables connect USB to 30-pin connectors on i-devices. What makes these special is the plastic molding around the 30-pin connector: Instead of protruding directly from the bottom of the iPhone, one bends right, the other goes "down" toward the back of the device. The cables are long (6') and significantly heavier feeling than a standard Apple connector cable.
All the cables tested well. I probably wouldn't want to rely on the travel cable every day, I'd be concerned how well the adapter will wear. On the other hand, the right turn cable and down angle cables seem to be very well made.
I was not able to compare these cables to the ones available on-line from Monoprice.com. However it should be noted that the 2-in-1 cable from monoprice is a foot longer and only five dollars, compared to $18.99 from StarTech.
