I am an unabashed fan of littleBits, the company that makes electronic building kits that snap together magnetically. They take out the danger and fear of experimenting with science. Kids can't hurt themselves or break anything; they bring out the fun in exploration and experimentation. The latest kit, Rule Your Room ($99.95) , is full of fun, practical projects that integrate sensors, motors, and other components. It is more than about building, it is about "understanding" how things work. Unlike many electronic sets, the instructions are engaging, well written and illustrated. The typography and layout adds to the clarity and engagement. I loved that a girl is featured on the box and the use of purples rather than gender suggestive blues and pinks. This is a toy that doesn't talk down to kids; instead it invites them to learn and put their creativity into action.
