The G810 Orion Spectrum Keyboard is labled a "gaming device". It is so much more: In short, this is the best keyboard I've tested.
The keyboard is the primary way I interface to the digital world. Whether I'm writing an article, programming, or gaming, the keyboard is still the way I get the bits and bytes in order. I want a keyboard that is intelligently layed out, with keys that offer enough resistance to help me think through my typing, but responsive enough to register a good, solid click when I press. I want a number pad for when I'm doing work, and function keys and audio controls as well. And I want it all in a solid base that has enough heft to stay where I put it regardless of how agressively I'm typing.
The G810 has all that and more. The Romer-G keys are reputed to actuate 25 percent faster than standard keys. I find them responsive, with just the right amoutn of pressure needed to activate. Moreover I like the shape and texture of the keys. Though I've seen them described as having a matte finish, I think they are actually, in paint terms, more like a semi gloss, with a slight concave top that is cupped just enough to hold your fingers in place. I also really appreciate that keys that have different output depending on the shift-key have both states clearly labeled and illuminated. For instance, the "2" key also shows the "@" sign, the "5", the "%", and the "[" also the "{". When you're gaming this isnt a big deal, but when you're programming or working on a spreadsheet this is a huge productivity booster over the standard minimilist look of many other gaming boards.
The keyboard is not agressively "clicky". My spouse found the distinctive click of the Razer keyboard to be intrusive, The G810 is not silent, but not overly loud. It passed "the wife test", at least in my case.
The keyboard can be illuminated in a seemingly endless array of layouts. These can be practical, such as designating certain functions by type, or helping you find a key quickly in the dark. Frankly, It just makes me happy to have some color in the workplace. However, if you want more control the software is there to help you customize the keyboard. Amazingly, particularly compared to other dynamically lit keyboards, there is little light leak between the keys, keeping the light effects as useful and not distracting.
Above the print screen button is a non-standard key that turns off certain other keys when you're gaming, preventing you from inadvertantly hitting the Windows key, for instance, in the middle of a game and accidentally be exited. Directly above the Pause button is button that turns off the lighting.
Audio controls are above the number pad, and above that is a cylindrical wheel that controls the volume as well as a mute button.
Logitech has been building gaming keyboards and the software that supports it for a long time, and it shows in the polish and power of the software. You can build macros, assign functions, design lighting layouts, and more. The best thing I can say about the software after six months of working with the keyboard dailyl is that it has never caused a crash or gotten in my way. You're free to use the software functions or not.
