Learning Resources Switcheroo Coding Crew ($38.40) is a robotics kit with a difference, one that might matter in capturing your child's interest! I've seen kid-coding projects that use robots, bug, and even rolling balls, but this is the first one that I can remember where the robot is in the shape of a car. The set comes with a roadway play mat that can be assembled from jigsaw-puzzle-like cardboard pieces in various shapes. Also included are challenge cards with projects to be coded. The battery powered (but not supplied) vehicle has three different shells that can be snapped in place that turn it into, for instance, a dump truck or police car. Programming (left, right, forward) is accomplished without a screen by pressing buttons on the top of the vehicle. Youngest users it will just enjoy making the robot move. Older (let's say 7 & up) will find the puzzle challenges more interesting. Learning Resources Switcheroo Coding Crew is currently priced at $38.40, and that seems a fair price for this set. I should note its suggested retail price of $60 strikes me as too high for what it is.
